Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell says he's not going to seek re-election next year.
In a brief statement released Monday, Sorrell said it had been an honor to serve the people of Vermont for more than 18 years. He says he's looking forward to continuing his work on the legal issues confronting the state until he leaves office in early 2016.
Sorrell, now 68 and a Democrat, was appointed attorney general by former Gov. Howard Dean in 1997. Since then he has been re-elected every two years.
In 2012 Sorrell narrowly survived a primary challenge from Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan, who has already announced he plans to seek the Democratic nomination to run for the office next year.
