Vermont Changes Amber Alert Procedures After Recent Case

U.S. Department of Justice

Vermont Public Safety officials are changing the way Amber Alert messages are sent out when a child is missing and believed to be in danger.

Officials did a review in the aftermath of the state's third use of the Amber Alert system on Sept. 5.

Many people were woken up by the Amber Alert tones early that day, but they received no details explaining why it was issued.

Police say the system led to the recovery of a 4-year-old girl taken by her grandmother and a friend in violation of a court order. The girl was found unharmed in New York State.

Among the changes, Vermont will now use the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to issue wireless alerts to cellphones.
