There is a preliminary election for mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts the day after Labor Day.
Springfield, like many cities, only recently rescheduled the preliminary election to avoid conflicts with Jewish holy days.
Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola said the date change, announced in mid-August has gotten a lot of attention.
" I think it is just going to boost the turnout, rather than the opposite," said Oyola
There are six candidates for mayor on the preliminary ballot. One person announced a write-in campaign. The top two vote getters advance to the November election.
Three term incumbent mayor Domenic Sarno declined invitations to at least four candidate forums citing either scheduling conflicts or family commitments.
