A southeastern Vermont wildlife management area will double in size after the state completes to land acquisitions.
Vermont Fish and Wildlife has received a $330,000 federal grant to purchase 459 acres of property to add to the Turner Hill Wildlife Management Area.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports that When the deal is completed, the area will encompass nearly 1,000 acres.
Officials say the deals will improve public access to the area. It's one of only four publicly owned locations of the endangered Northeastern bulrush, a wetland plant.
Jane Lazorchak, the agency's lands acquisition coordinator, says she expects to meet with the Athens Selectboard soon to discuss the land deals and hopes they'll be completed by the end of the year.
