Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has come out in support of the Iran nuclear deal announced by the Obama administration last month. The Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had spoken favorably about the agreement, but stopped short of full support until Wednesday. Speaking on the Senate floor, Murphy says Iran is less likely to obtain a nuclear weapon with the deal in place than without it.

“And this isn't peace with Iran,” Murphy said. “We still reserve the right to fight them tooth and nail on their support for terrorism, their denial of the right of Israel to exist, their miserable human rights record.”

Congress is expected to vote on the deal by mid-September. Some Congressional Republicans and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are among those who have railed against the agreement. Democrats like Senator Chuck Schumer of New York have also been tepid.
