Officials Say No Federal Help For Central Vermont Flooding Damage

Vermont emergency management officials say the damage from flooding in central Vermont earlier this month did not cause enough damage to qualify for federal disaster assistance.

In the aftermath of last week's storms experts from a number of state agencies worked with affected communities to determine the monetary value of damage to public roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

The total estimate was about $750,000, short of the $1 million minimum damage level the state is required to meet in order to request federal assistance.

Officials say that even though the damaged caused by the July 19 and 20 flooding in the Barre and Plainfield area was not severe enough to warrant a federal damage assessment, state resources could be used to help communities cover the cost of repairing roads.
