Pittsfield Man Freed Pending SJC Review Of Rape Conviction

wikipedia.org

A Pittsfield man who has spent more than a decade behind bars for a rape he says he did not commit has been freed while the state's highest court weighs his case.Ronjon Cameron was released from prison last week and on Wednesday emerged from a court hearing held to establish his release conditions maintaining his innocence.

His lawyer tells The Berkshire Eaglethat DNA evidence introduced at the 68-year-old Cameron's 2003 trial was inconclusive and additional testing exonerates him.

The Supreme Judicial Court must now decide whether to grant Cameron a new trial, overturn his conviction, or let it stand.

Prosecutors say Cameron's conviction should remain in place because he was convicted on more than just DNA evidence.

Cameron was charged with raping a woman in September 1999.
