Local Bishop Says Pope Is Speaking To Wide Audience With Encyclical On The Environment

Mark Dupont via Twitter

A Roman Catholic church leader says the Pope’s encyclical on the environment is an important message to people of all faiths.

Springfield Bishop Mitchell Rozanski said the first major document from Pope Francis will get people talking and get people thinking.

" He is really addressing this encyclical to everyone," said Rozanski. " He is calling for everyone to take care of the one world we all share in common, as the Pope says in his encyclical."

Rozanski said the encyclical builds on statements from several of Francis’ predecessors, and does not represent a new stand by the Catholic church.  Work on the encyclical began under Pope Benedict XVI.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
