The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees Wednesday is expected to give final approval to a hike in tuition and fees.
The increase in mandatory charges for undergraduate students in the UMass system would be the first in three years. The amount of the increase depends on the campus, and also how much money the legislature appropriates for the university in the next state budget.
At the flagship Amherst campus tuition and fees could go up by $913.
UMass spokesman Robert Connolly said the university has cut costs in an effort to avoid having to charge students more.
"There are a number of steps we've taken in recent years that have produced savings of more than $200 million across the board," he said.
Connolly said enrollment has increased and that has resulted in the need to hire more faculty and staff and improve facilities.
