Massachusetts education officials have awarded more than $3 million to support efforts to turnaround three troubled middle schools in Springfield.
The competitive federal grant funding will pay for extending the school day and school year at the Duggan, Forest Park, and Van Sickle middle schools, according to Springfield school superintendent Dan Warwick.
" They had to convince the ( Massachusetts) Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that the turnaround plans will produce radical gains in student achievement. To win all three grants, over $3 million, is going to be very helpful in moving those schools forward."
The three schools are ranked as Level 4, or underperforming, in the state’s school accountability system. The turnaround plan includes new evaluation methods for teachers and principals.
