The Vermont Senate has agreed with House changes to new restrictions on firearms ownership in Vermont.
The key House change the Senate agreed to on Thursday was the elimination of an 18-month waiting period after a person is deemed no longer mentally ill before they can ask a court to restore their right to buy a gun.
The underlying bill would report to a federal background check database when someone is found by a court to be mentally ill and a danger to self or others.
It would also make it a state crime for the first time for people convicted of a long list of crimes to possess firearms.
Governor Peter Shumlin has been cool to gun law changes, but has not said he will veto the bill.
