Vermont House Passes Gun Restrictions

The Vermont House has passed a bill designed to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and people who are dangerously mentally ill.

The 80-62 vote on Friday morning means both the House and Senate have passed similar versions of the legislation.

House Minority Leader Republican Don Turner says his caucus is concerned about the legislation.  “We have 250 years of tradition here. Vermonters have been able to protect and bear arms and this bill is the first step to limiting that ability. We’re very concerned about it.”

Governor Peter Shumlin has been cool to the legislation, but says he may sign it if he senses agreement on the compromise between supporters and opponents.
