Rare Falcon Finds Residency On Vermont Nuclear Smokestack

A rare falcon species has fashioned a home on a southeastern Vermont energy company's smokestack.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports employees at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station have helped create and maintain a home for peregrine falcons.

Employees of the now-closing plant became aware of the falcons in 2009 after receiving a call from a New Hampshire Audubon biologist. Steve Skibniowski, a longtime plant employee, built the nest box on the smokestack for the birds.

The box is located about 200 feet above ground and is only accessible by an attached ladder.

Skibniowski says they installed a private camera feed allowing them to watch and track the younger birds' progress as they grow.

Vermont has roughly 40 pairs of peregrine falcons statewide.
