Man Convicted Of Raping UMass Student Sentenced

A 21-year old Pittsfield man has been sentenced to serve a minimum of 8 years in a Massachusetts prison for raping a UMass student in her Amherst dorm room in 2012.

In sentencing Emmanuel Bile to 8 -10 years in state prison, Northampton Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Kinder said he had participated in “an alcohol-fueled sex-crazed assault of horrific proportions.”

Assistant DA Jennifer Suhl praised the victim’s bravery and noted the victim had trusted Bile who had been her friend.

" He violated that trust and used that trust against her," she said in arguing for a 10-12 year prison sentence.

A jury on Monday after ten hours of deliberation over two days found Bile guilty of two of three counts of aggravated rape.

Three other defendants are charged in the case.  Their trial dates are expected to be determined later this month, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
