WAMC

The UMass Amherst Police Chief  is leaving to take a new job.

John Horvath, who became UMass Amherst Police Chief in 2012 has been hired to be the chief of police in Rockport, a seacoast town north of Boston.   UMass Amherst spokesman Ed Blaguszewski confirmed Horvath is planning to leave.

"We will have some time to decide on a succession," said Blaguszewski.  " I believe the chief is planning to stay until the end of the semester."

Horvath come up through the ranks in the Hartford, Connecticut Police Dept. before he was hired at UMass.  Days before accepting the new job he helped oversee a security plan that kept in check confrontations between students and police during the annual Blarney Blowout.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
