As The Snow Piled Up So Did The Bills For Cities And Towns

The blizzard that hit Massachusetts this week has taken a  toll on municipal budgets.

Cities and towns could get back much of the money that was spent to plow several feet of snow off the streets and sidewalks, if a federal disaster declaration is issued.  Massachusetts Lt Gov Karyn Polito said the administration is putting together the paperwork to determine if the state qualifies for federal help.

" We will be going through the process working with MEMA and FEMA to document the costs," Polito said Thursday in Holyoke.

The city of Springfield has spent nearly all the $1.6 million budgeted for plowing, salting and sanding operations this winter. State law allows municipalities to carry a deficit to deal with snow storms, so long as the money to cover the overspending is allocated the following fiscal year.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
