Massachusetts Report Highlights Innovation Economy Job Growth

A new report credits the innovation economy with creating 100,000 jobs in Massachusetts since 2003.

The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative report said most innovation based industries, that include high tech and life sciences businesses, are based in the greater Boston area.   The report noted efforts have been made to grow the innovation economy in western Massachusetts.   MassMutual last year set up a $5 million dollar fund that company vice president Nick Fyntrilakis said is being used to help high potential start-ups in greater Springfield.

"It is early stage capitol to really take companies that have terrific ideas with fleshed out business plans that are ready to take it to the next level."

MassMutual also funded a center to mentor entrepreneurs.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
