The Roman Catholic Bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts has ordered a new study on whether to rebuild the city’s only Catholic high school that was destroyed by the June 2011 tornado.
Bishop Mitchell Rozanksi, who became head of the Springfield Diocese in August, has appointed Monsignor John Bonzagni to help determine the fate of Cathedral High School. Bonzagni is going to meet separately with stakeholders including teachers, parents, alumnae and politicians to try to reach a consensus.
" It is not a done deal in terms of yes we are going to rebuild, or no we are not going to rebuild," said Bonzagni on Thursday. " What is a done deal is we are going to have a conversation moving forward on what is the best way to go."
Retired Bishop Timothy McDonnell pledged earlier this year to rebuild Cathedral High School with insurance proceeds and money from FEMA. The diocese launched a campaign to raise a $10 million tuition endowment to counter steadily falling enrollment.
