Milne Changes Tack, Won't Concede

Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Milne appears to be backing away from pre-election statements that he would concede the race if incumbent Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin won a plurality but did not get more than 50 percent of the vote.

On Thursday Milne said he may ask for a recount or ask lawmakers to elect him in January.

On Oct. 23, Milne told the AP he would concede the election if Shumlin won, even if he didn't hit 50 percent.

If no candidate gets more than 50 percent, the Vermont Constitution calls for a joint session of the Legislature to decide the election. Milne says an unofficial Associated Press tally showing Shumlin with about 46 percent and him with 45 percent shows that a majority of Vermonters don't want Shumlin to serve as governor.
