Vermont State Police say a man has been found dead inside a house of a self-inflicted gunshot wound more than five hours after shots were fired at troopers and police negotiated with him.

Police responded to the home in Duxbury after getting a call from family members at about 4:45 p.m. Monday that the man was threatening to harm himself. After police arrived, shots were fired from the door and troopers took cover and requested assistance.

Neighboring residences were evacuated as a precaution.

Police said they found the man, identified as 58-year-old Paul Sweetser, dead at about 11:15 p.m.
