A spokesman for the federal Transportation Security Agency says TSA agents discovered a firearm in the carry-on luggage of a man who was trying to board a plane at the Burlington International Airport.

Authorities did not identify the 46-year-old man who was in line to board an Orlando-bound flight on Monday.

TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy said agents followed their normal protocol and immediately contacted local law enforcement.

Burlington Police, who cover the city-owned airport in South Burlington, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The TSA says it intercepts about 35 firearms in an average week around the country. Fines for bringing a firearm to an airport security checkpoint can range up to $11,000.
