Federal Disaster Help Available To Victims Of Holyoke Fire

wikipedia commons

Federal disaster aid is being made available to the victims of a massive fire last month in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Governor Patrick requested the emergency declaration for the fire on June 16th that tore through a large apartment building in downtown Holyoke leaving more than 80 people homeless. No one was seriously injured.  The federal disaster declaration will make low interest loans available. Initially, the Red Cross provided temporary shelter and the victims received donated clothing and household items following an appeal from Mayor Alex Morse.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
