The U.S. Postal Service is cutting hours at thousands of mostly rural post offices, and meeting objections in some places.
Hours are being cut at fifty post offices in Massachusetts including several in Franklin County and the Berkshires. Postal Service spokeswoman Christine Dugas said the changes will be finished by early next year.
"In some locations it has already occurred and in some locations it is in the process. Part of the process is to assure the lobby is accessible 24-hours and that means putting in extra security doors and procedures to protect the mail in the back."
The selectboard in Wendall issued a statement opposing the plan to have the post office open just six hours a day. The postal service , two years ago, abandoned plans to close thousands of rural post offices because of opposition from the public and Congress.
