The Massachusetts House has approved an economic development bill that includes a sales tax holiday weekend in August.
The bill authorizes tens of millions of dollars for job training, brownfields redevelopment, and initiatives in the so-called Gateway Cities, which include Pittsfield, Holyoke, and Springfield. Democratic State Rep. Stephen Kulik of Worthington said the bill is an effort to grow the economy in areas outside greater Boston.
" We've looked at a number of areas where we can assist private business with incentives and resources to help this economy grow and produce more jobs."
The sales tax holiday for August 16th and 17th was approved as an amendment to the jobs bill. The house rejected a Republican move to make the sales tax holiday a permanent fixture on the summer calendar. Senate leaders are crafting their own jobs bill.
