Springfield's New Cultural District To Host Jazz Festival

WAMC

A jazz festival will return to downtown Springfield, Massachusetts this summer.

The Springfield Jazz and Roots Festival is scheduled for Saturday, August 9th. The stage will be set up in Court Square.   Festival organizer, Evan Plotkin, said it is a pivotal event in Springfield’s newly recognized cultural district.

"The historic old church, city hall and Symphony Hall, the MassMutual Center surrounding this beautiful park it just lends itself so much to an activity of such cultural richness and importance."

A jazz festival and arts show four years ago drew over 20,000 people to downtown Springfield.  This summer’s festival will be headlined by legendary musician Charles Neville.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
