UMass Amherst has a nearly $2 billion impact on the region’s economy according to a new study.

The flagship Amherst Campus is the largest contributor in the five-campus system to a state-wide annual economic impact of $6.1 billion.  UMass Amherst spokesman Ed Blaguszewski said the study measured several factors including the purchasing power of the campus’ 5,000 employees and 25,000 students.

" Many of them will stay here over time and that is important and that is recognized in college towns across America as a foundation for a strong economy."

The study by the university’s Donahue Institute was released as state lawmakers are preparing to finalize the next state budget which includes the annual appropriation for the university system.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
