The Vermont attorney general's office is warning business owners to beware of calls or emails from groups claiming to be raising money for local schools.

The state says the out-of-state businesses are seeking money for advertisements that will be placed on full-color homework folders that will be given to students.

The attorney general's office says the amount of money being collected is far in excess of the cost of the "folders" that may be delivered to the school.

Any Vermont businesses that have received such requests should file a complaint with the state's Consumer Assistance Program.
