Vermont Says Campaign Limits Remain For '14 Cycle

Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell says the state's campaign finance contribution limits will remain the same through the end of the year.

Sorrell issued the formal opinion Tuesday after being asked by the Secretary of State's office after the Legislature passed an updated campaign finance law.

The state's new campaign finance law, Act 90, contained a drafting error that made it appear there was a gap between the date the old limits expire and Jan. 1 when the new limits take effect.

Sorrell says the intent of the Legislature was to have the old contributions remain through this year's election cycle: No candidate for election to Vermont office shall accept contributions totaling more than $1,000 from a single source nor more than $3,000 from a political action committee.
