Downtown Springfield, Massachusetts is expected to face a parking crunch as a result of major construction projects happening at the same time.
Hundreds of parking spaces in two Springfield Parking Authority garages that sit beneath Interstate 91 will be lost while MassDOT replaces the highway decks. The project is scheduled to begin later this year and last for three years. At the same, the planned construction of a resort casino downtown will eliminate hundreds of spaces in private lots, according to Springfield’s chief development officer Kevin Kennedy.
"A parking crunch downtown ,while it is a serious management issue and a serious inconvenience for people, it is also an indication we have a lot of activity downtown. So, that is a positive."
Kennedy said the city is looking to acquire some downtown property to provide more parking.
