Vermont Lawmakers Busy, Gearing Up For Adjournment

WAMC/Pat Bradley

Police use of stun guns and drivers' use of cellphones are among the topics legislative leaders hope to finish during what is hoped to be the last week of the 2014 legislative session.

The Vermont Senate passed its version of a bill calling for statewide training for police seeing to use Taser stun guns, while the House began an afternoon session with a debate over allowing home-based child care providers to unionize and negotiate rates with the state.

House Speaker Shap Smith and Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell both say they think and hope lawmakers can finish their work for the year by this coming weekend.

But some lawmakers say adjournment could be slowed by disagreement between the House and Senate over a school governance bill.
