The Pittsfield City Council unanimously approved the reestablishment of a Human Rights Commission dormant since the late 1990s.
Cecilia Rock was one of seven approved for the commission Tuesday night along with appointees city councilor Churchill Cotton and school committee member Josh Cutler. It will address complaints, conduct reviews and file reports for the city. Here’s Rock.
“Move from a place where we no longer have to worry about, hopefully, discrimination,” Rock said. “Overt or covert.”
The commission is separate from an advisory council formed this past summer tasked with updating the city’s affirmative action plan for the first time since the early 1990s. Members of Berkshire County’s recently reactivated NAACP chapter had asked the city if it had such a plan.
