Remains Of Child Missing On State Agency's Watch Apparently Found

The body of a small child was discovered along a highway in central Massachusetts Friday, and it appears to be that of a boy who went missing while in the care of the state’s child welfare agency.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said the body was found wrapped in a type of blanket inside a suitcase or duffel bag in a grassy area about 40 feet off a busy interstate highway.  He said an autopsy will be performed and it appears to be a homicide.

" The height and weight of the child we have found off  of route 190 in Sterling are consistent with that of Jeremiah Oliver," said Early.

Five year old Jeremiah Oliver has been missing since last September. His mother and her boyfriend are facing several charges in connection with the disappearance.  The case caused a public outcry directed at the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.  Three DCF workers were fired and Governor Patrick ordered reforms at the agency.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
