The Vermont House has rejected raising income tax rates on top earners so the state can make up for cuts in federal support for food stamps.
The House debate came during a discussion of taxes and spending that was expected to last the rest of the day on Thursday.
Rep. Paul Poirier, a Barre City independent, introduced an amendment to raise income taxes on people earning more than $225,000 a year.
Poirier said he would later offer an amendment on the budget bill to spend the $10 million the tax changes made to restore money cut from federal support for the program.
Rep. Janet Ancel, chairwoman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said her committee unanimously opposed Poirier's amendment.
