VT Officials Say State Has Health Inequalities

The Vermont Department of Health says there are health inequalities across the state.

The 2014 County Health Rankings released Wednesday showed Chittenden County is the healthiest while Essex and Orleans tied for the least healthy counties in the state.

The ranking is measured using data on life length, quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care and the physical environment.

Heather Danis, the Health Department's director of the Burlington district office, said even in Chittenden County there were disparities by income and education.

James Biernat, director of the Health Department's Newport district office, said the report underscores the scope of the Northeast Kingdom's current challenges but that the counties are "fully devoted to advancing our community's health."
