New Mayors Take Office In Massachusetts

It was inauguration day Monday for mayors in several Massachusetts cities

The biggest change was in Boston, where former state legislator Marty Walsh became that city’s 48th mayor, succeeding Tom Menino who retired after 20 years as mayor of the state’s largest city.  In Chicopee, Richard Kos was sworn in as mayor.  It’s his second time in the office having served a decade ago.

"Like most urban communities in the northeast we have infrastructure, job creation, public safety and education as the primary focus."

Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse, who made national news when he was elected to the office straight out of college two years ago, was sworn in to begin a second two –year term.  Also starting a second two year term is Mayor David Narkewicz in Northampton.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
