As record cold sets in to western Massachusetts officials are concerned about the homeless.
The city of Springfield activated a cold weather emergency response plan and encouraged people to call 911 to report the location of anyone who may need shelter. Bill Miller, executive director of Friends of the Homeless says the agency’s Springfield shelter is open round the clock and serves three hot meals a day.
" We work closely with the police department and the local health department. If anybody is out there were certainly want them to understand that tonight is different than any other night we've seen in the last few years as far as I can recall."
Miller said during the winter months the shelter averages 150 people a night.
