A new study projects the population of Massachusetts will grow by 4.4 percent over the next twenty years
The comprehensive study by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute forecasts the state’s population will increase by 291,000 people to a total of 6.8 million people by 2030. The greater Boston area and parts of central Massachusetts are predicted to grow at rates exceeding the state average, while areas of western Massachusetts will stay flat, or even loose population, according to the Donahue Institute’s Susan Strate
The bulk of the state’s population growth is forecast to occur before 2020 and then taper off as the population ages.
