Education officials in Massachusetts have praised the Springfield Public Schools for implementing a new teacher evaluation system.
Eighty-eight percent of the educators in the state’s second largest school district were evaluated, exceeding the state mandated 50 percent completion rate for the first year of the new evaluation system. The evaluations judged 74 percent of the city’s educators to be “proficient”, 12 percent “exemplary”,12 percent “ needs improvement” and 1.5 percent “ unsatisfactory.” Springfield school superintendent Dan Warwick said the point of the evaluation is to help teachers improve.
Student test results won’t be used as part of the evaluation until 2015.
