U.S. Senator Edward Markey says he's planning to run for re-election.

Markey told reporters Monday that this is a critical time in the country's history and it's important that Massachusetts has its voice heard in Washington.

He said he and fellow Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren are doing their best to represent the state in the Senate. He said he wants to continue that effort.

Markey defeated Republican Gabriel Gomez this summer to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of John Kerry to become secretary of state. Markey had earlier defeatedU.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary.

Markey is up for re-election next year.

No Republicans or fellow Democrats have declared their intention to challenge Markey, who served 37 years in the House before making the jump to the Senate.
