Vermont's state auditor says he's found nearly $300,000 in savings in the purchasing and oversight of state cellphone services.
Auditor Doug Hoffer said the state's current system is decentralized and doesn't have consistent policies nor procedures to ensure that resources are optimized.
Hoffer said in 2012, charges for 3,080 state-issued cellphones totaled about $1.6 million. But 9 percent of those phones weren't used at all, and 20 percent had limited use. He said the little-used cellphones cost the state about $272,000.
The audit also found over 5 million allowed voice minutes went unused, nearly half of the total.
Secretary of Administration Jeb Spaulding said he plans to use the report as a springboard to establish a comprehensive statewide framework governing the purchase, usage, and management of cellphone and land lines.
