The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and a hospital are hosting a conference Tuesday to highlight efforts to make health care costs more transparent.

As part of the state’s new healthcare cost containment law hospitals are to make public what they charge for elective surgeries, such as joint replacements, so people can comparison shop.   David Seltz, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission said the new law requires the  pricing information to be available this month.

Tuesday’s conference at the UMass Medical School in Worcester will feature top executives from health insurance companies and hospitals, along with advocates for both large and small businesses and consumers.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
