Voters in Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District are heading to the polls to winnow down a field of seven Democrats and three Republicans in the state's latest special election primary.
Massachusetts Secretary William Galvin is predicting a strong voter turnout. Galvin said 100,000 to 120,000 Democrats and up to 20,000 Republicans could cast ballots Tuesday.
The Democratic candidates include Belmont state Sen. William Brownsberger, Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, Ashland state Sen. Karen Spilka, Melrose state Sen. Katherine Clark and Medford state Rep. Carl Sciortino, former Lexington School Committee member Martin Long, and Stoneham resident Paul John Maisano.
The Republicans include Boston attorney Frank Addivinola, Holliston resident Michael Stopa and Framingham veteran Tom Tierney.
The special election to fill Sen. Edward Markey's former House seat is Dec. 10.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
