Westfield State University trustees are holding a special meeting Wednesday to consider suspending university president Evan Dobelle.
Dobelle has been under fire since August when an auditor’s report flagged travel and entertainment expenses he charged to taxpayers and the school’s fundraising foundation. Dobelle asserts he’s been targeted by the chairman of the school’s board of trustees and top state education officials who want him out so they can advance their own agendas. Asked about the controversy, UMass system president Robert Caret said it reflects badly on public higher education.
Caret said there are checks and balances in place at UMass that would curb any lavish spending by himself and other administrators.
