VT Lawmakers Voice Concerns on Energy Siting

Some Vermont lawmakers are voicing tough questions for a special panel that reviewed the state's process for siting wind turbines and other energy projects.

The Energy Generation Siting Policy Commission presented findings Wednesday to the House and Senate committees on Natural Resources and Energy, and some members of those panels expressed concerns about the panel's recommendations.

Linda McGinnis, director of the commission, told lawmakers the special commission was recommending a multi-layered planning process for new energy projects, involving local, regional and state officials.

But some lawmakers said they feared the process would still be too state-controlled.

Governor Peter Shumlin appointed the commission after complaints that the Public Service Board had not given sufficient weight to local concerns when it approved projects like the Kingdom Community Wind development on Lowell Mountain.
