WAMC

More than two years after a tornado ripped through the only Catholic High School in Springfield Massachusetts, the diocese has reached a settlement with its insurance company

Bishop Timothy McDonnell announced a nearly $60 million settlement with Catholic Mutual Insurance.  The diocese will proceed with some demolition and a construction analysis on the Cathedral High School building that was ruined by the June 1st , 2011 tornado. Spokesman Mark Dupont said the bishop also announced a challenge to Cathedral alumni to build a tuition endowment to help counter falling enrollment.

The high school that was built in the 1950s was designed for 3,000 students. Current enrollment is less than 500.

Since the tornado Cathedral High School has held classes in a rented school building in Wilbraham.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home.
