Plan To Be Announce For Spending Disaster Recovery Funds

WAMC

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno will announce on Wednesday a plan for spending more than $21 million in disaster recovery funding the city was awarded.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced earlier this year Springfield would receive $21.9 million to help recover from the June 1, 2011 tornado and the remnants of Hurricane Irene later that same summer. Mayor Sarno said the money will help move the city’s tornado recovery plan forward.

The city held three public meetings in July to solicit suggestions on how to spend the money

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
