The murder case involving the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy has led Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley to call for a re-examination of the state's domestic violence laws.

Coakley on Monday also sought a full review of the circumstances surrounding the case, which she called a "horrible tragedy." But she stopped short of criticizing the handling of the case by the Middlesex District Attorney's office.

Jared Remy pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of murder and domestic assault and battery in the killing of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Jennifer Martel.

On Wednesday, Remy was released on personal recognizance in an open assault and battery case in which Martel was the alleged victim. Prosecutors said there was no active restraining order against Remy and have defended the decision not to seek bail in the earlier case.
