Mohegan Sun officials Monday night unveiled a new architectural design and more elaborate plans for the casino the company hopes to build in rural western Massachusetts.
Mohegan Sun officials say the redesigned casino made of stone, glass and metal best fits its surroundings, a wooded hill overlooking the town of Palmer. The project includes a 260 thousand square foot casino, 550 hotel rooms, 300 thousand square feet of retail space, and a water park. Mohegan Sun CEO Mitchell Etess said the project has a price tag of nearly $1 billion, which is more than what MGM and Hard Rock International propose to invest in competing casino projects.
First Mohegan Sun must convince voters in Palmer to accept the project. A referendum is tentatively scheduled in September.
