A judge says a Vermont man shot and wounded by police after allegedly assaulting two Winooski officers is not mentally competent to stand trial.

The opinion of a psychiatrist was noted Wednesday during a competency hearing for 35-year-old Isaac Sage in Burlington.

At the hearing, Judge Kevin Griffin lifted the $10,000 bail against Sage, but ordered him to remain hospitalized pending a new court order.

The Burlington Free Press reports Griffin said that he didn't want Sage in jail, but he didn't want him released into the community either.

A prosecutor said Sage had been living in a group home before assaulting the officers, who tried to subdue him with a stun gun April 25, but ended up shooting him in the leg.
