Democratic Senate Candidates Hold Fiery Debate

The two Democratic candidates in the special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts argued bitterly over their Congressional voting records for much of an hour long debate Tuesday night in Springfield.

Representative Stephen Lynch and Representative Edward Markey slammed each other over votes on issues including homeland security, healthcare reform, and free trade.  At one point, Lynch called Markey a “ liar” after Markey claimed  Lynch had opposed the federal bailout of the auto industry in 2008.

Markey accused Lynch of  deliberately distorting votes Markey had cast to make it appear Markey is weak on homeland security.  Polls show Markey continues to be the front runner in the race that has turned nasty just in the closing days.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
